To support the industry in becoming greener, we have now changed to 50% recycled plastic tubes for our QHPE QuelStop HPE Intumescent Graphite Sealant and QSS QuelStop Intumescent Acoustic Acrylic Sealant. Although the material of the tubes has changed, this does not affect the sealant.
The sealant is exactly the same product!
HPE Intumescent Graphite Sealant
QuelStop HPE intumescent graphite sealant is an intumescent, acrylic-based sealant which maintains the fire rating of floors and walls where services have penetrated through them. For example, sealing around services including combustible insulation, combustible pipes and cable, cable trays, bundles, and ladders.
It also provides a fire-rated linear joint or gap seal, in which case, a PE backing rod or mineral wool can be used as a backing material. This ensures that the correct depth of the HPE sealant is applied which helps to achieve the required fire performance.
HPE sealant is used as part of the QuelStop fire batt system or direct to the substrate.
Features and benefits
QuelStop HPE intumescent graphite sealant has many features and benefits including up to a four-hour fire rating and is suitable to use with Lubrizol® CPVC piping systems and materials, such as FlowGuard® pipe and fittings and BlazeMaster® fire sprinkler systems.
It is also suitable to use with Spears® CPVC products, such as FlameGuard® CPVC fire sprinkler products, LabWaste® CPVC corrosive waste drainage system and EverTuff® CPVC CTS plumbing system.

Intumescent Acoustic Acrylic Sealant
QuelStop intumescent acoustic acrylic sealant is a water-based intumescent acrylic and is also used to maintain the fire rating of floors and walls where services have passed through them.
For example, it can be used in a similar way as HPE sealant to seal around services such as cable, cable trays, bundles, and ladders. It can also be used to seal around non-combustible pipes.
Like HPE sealant, it can be used as part of the fire batt system or direct to the substrate.
QuelStop acrylic sealant should be applied to all cuts, joints, and bare edges of the QuelStop fire batt.
Furthermore, it can be used as a linear joint seal in a variety of applications between concrete and concrete, softwood or steel, and to a gypsum board headtrack and around wooden fire door frames.
Features and benefits
QuelStop intumescent acoustic acrylic sealant has many features and benefits including up to a four-hour fire rating and is suitable for low movement joints and remains flexible. The maximum movement capability is ≤7.5%.
Key differences between HPE Sealant and Acrylic Sealant
It can be confusing when trying to tell these two products apart.
However, the key differences are that the acrylic sealant is used for sealing the exposed edges of fire batt and around service penetrations for limited combustibility and in the event of a fire, it forms a low-reaction char.
Whereas HPE sealant is applied around plastic pipes and when exposed to fire, it reacts by expanding to fill the gap left by the combustible product.
It is important to always check the test evidence and utilise any guidance when using the sealant in any of the applications mentioned above.
