The QuelCast Cast in Fire Collar: A Modern Alternative to Traditional Methods

Cast in Confidence

The QuelCast Cast in Fire Collar is a simple but effective method of firestopping plastic pipes and cables penetrating concrete floors. While it is well known for its fire-resistant properties in new build developments, the unique health and safety benefits it offers are often overlooked.

Picture this…

Or maybe you don’t need to. You’re preparing to firestop a pipe penetrating a concrete floor.

The building has already been constructed, which means the only way to achieve the installation is to core drill through the slab. Three things come to mind: it’s expensive, time-consuming, and dangerous!

You’ve probably had experiences where the heavy drill bit gets stuck or the core falls to the floor below, meaning one other person must stand below to ensure safety.

And that’s not all. An open hole in the floor now presents additional safety risks.

Then there’s the compound and the need to mix and pour it to the correct depth while working from a height. It’s hard work!

Fast forward to your next project. You’ve engaged early with Quelfire and discovered that the QuelCast Cast in Fire Collar can be installed during the building’s construction. Yes, that means no core drilling, no shuttering, and certainly no working from height.

The pipe runs through the QuelCast, and its sturdy lid supports foot traffic and light-access equipment.

So, what does the QuelCast product consist of? Its outer cylinder is made of a polypropylene material that contains intumescent properties and an integrated smoke seal. Upon installation, the collar, complete with its ready-fitted robust lid, is secured to the formwork. How does it work in the event of a fire? When exposed to high temperatures, the intumescent inside the collar expands. This means it increases in volume and decreases in density.

The pressure within the circular space helps close any gaps left behind as the pipe or cables soften, maintaining the building’s compartmentation

Smoke is typically the biggest killer in a fire. The cold smoke seal is important. It stops toxic fumes from moving into areas not directly affected by the fire.

The QuelCast Cast in Fire Collar is a fully fire-tested product. It also offers Type X Durability, meaning it can withstand extreme weather conditions.

Its range of tested details can be found by using Quelfire’s QuelSelector Tool, which helps customers identify the most relevant solution for their application.

However, the project team must successfully implement early engagement to ensure the use of this type of fire collar. If planned precisely and in advance, installing the QuelCast Cast in Fire Collar proves to be more cost and time-effective than a traditional ‘retrofit’ fire collar.
