Do all fixing lugs need to be secured on the QWR Fire Collar?

Yes, all fixing lugs need to be secured on the QWR Fire Collar. Let us explain why!

Before we delve into the details, very quickly, a fire collar is a closure device that prevents the spread of fire where plastic pipes penetrate fire compartment floors and walls.

It is a circular product that consists of a metal outer shell and, within that shell, a high-performance intumescent material.

At Quelfire, we have a range of QWR Fire Collars designed to suit different pipe diameters, ranging from 25mm to 160mm.

Each fire collar has a different number of fixing lugs – which are little tabs where the screws go.

Why do all fixing lugs need to be secured?

Take this, for example: you need to fire stop a 110mm pipe in the corner of a room. Based on test evidence, you can use the QWR110, which has four screw points.A Quelfire fire collar installed around a plastic pipe, penetrating a plasterboard fire compartment wall. However, due to the positioning of the fire collar, one fixing point is extremely hard to reach. So, can you use three screws instead?

While it may not seem necessary to secure all four lugs, the fire collar has been tested and certified with a fixing in every tab. To stay compliant, it’s important to follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions.

If you ever find yourself in a situation where one of the screw lugs is inaccessible, we may have another system that’s a better fit for your application. So don’t hesitate to reach out, and we’ll support you with this.

What kind of fixings should I use?

Another question that often comes up regarding the QWR Fire Collar is what fasteners should be used.Mix of Quelfire fixings on orange background with Quelfire watermark. Now, this ultimately depends on the substrate – meaning the wall or floor system that forms the fire compartmentation.

You should review the relevant standard installation detail for a specific application to determine the exact fixing type and size.

Here are a few options:

  • Hollow wall sleeve anchors: for fixing into plasterboard. The anchor expands behind the wall when the screw is tightened.
  • Concrete sleeve anchors: for solid concrete slabs. When tightened, the bolt pulls the sleeve outward, expanding and securing it.
  • Pigtail screws: for securing to fire batt. A wire-style fixing that screws directly into the mineral wool of the fire batt.

In summary:

  • All lugs must be used.
  • If you can’t access all the lugs, the QWR Fire Collar won’t be suitable, but we can help you find an alternative solution.
  • Choosing the correct fixing is important!
