Can I use a fire collar on a hollow core slab?

Whilst it is logical to consider a hollow core concrete slab as similar to a traditional reinforced concrete floor, manufacturers of hollow core slabs have very strict requirements around the use of mechanical fixings which can potentially affect the structural integrity of the slab.

On this basis, Quelfire have carried out specific testing with hollow core slabs using non-mechanical fixing solutions, therefore we would not recommend the use of a fire collar.

Planning and coordination is critical as the internal hollow cores themselves require sealing as well as the actual penetration, so a slightly bigger hole is generally required than that for a standard fire collar in order to allow the installer to insert the materials required.

QWR Fire Collars can be used in a hollow core slab but must be installed within the QF2 Compound, following detail QF2-HC150-07.

We now offer the full range of hollow core slabs with larger aperture sizes compared to our previous hollow core range. While we can provide apertures up to 1600mm x 750mm, larger apertures need to be confirmed with the hollow core slab manufacturer, as they are based on the manufacturer’s allowances, not just our aperture sizes.
