Intumescent Fire Collar for Large Diameter Plastic Pipes | QWX
Description
Description
Designed to maintain a building’s compartmentation, the QWX Fire Collar effectively prevents the spread of fire through large-diameter plastic pipes that extend over compartment lines. It is suitable for plastic pipes with diameters of 200mm, 225mm, 250mm, 315mm, 350mm, and 400mm.
The QWX features a stainless-steel outer layer that contains a high-performance intumescent material which reacts under the influence of heat to exert pressure on the pipe as it softens to form a carbonaceous char which provides an effective insulation plug thus preventing fire passing through to the adjoining compartment.
When temperatures reach approximately 200°C, the intumescent will create a carbonaceous char that fills the gap left by the melting surfaces.
The QWX Fire Collar is suitable for concrete floors and blockwork walls, and can be retrofitted.
It has been rigorously tested to BS EN 1366-3 (the fire resistance test standard for service penetrations) and classified to EN 13501-2 (fire classification of construction products and building elements). The QWX Intumescent Fire Collar has been fire-tested in a variety of applications, with some achieving 240 minutes* Integrity and Insulation fire resistance (EI 240), delivering a reliable penetration seal for large plastic pipes through walls and floors.
*EI 240 was achieved using specific testing configurations. Please check the tested scope of application to ensure suitability for specific site conditions.
Standards & Approvals
Standards & Approvals
The QWX Intumescent Fire Collars should be used where a plastic pipe penetrates a fire rated wall or floor.
- For vertical pipework, one unit is installed to the underside of the floor, for certain plastic pipes, an additional unit is installed to the topside of the floor.
- For horizontal pipework, one unit should be fitted to both sides of the wall.
The surface where the QWX Intumescent Fire Collar is fitted to, must be clean and free of loose debris/dust. Any irregularities between the QWX and the supporting construction, and between the pipe and supporting construction, should be filled by applying QuelStop Intumescent Acrylic Sealant.
The aperture for the plastic pipe should be drilled as close as possible to the outside diameter of the plastic pipes and aperture sizes are described in the “Specification Details” table shown further below on this page.
If the apertures are drilled too large, then additional Quelfire products such as QF2 Fire Protection Compound or QuelStop Fire Batt will then be required so care and communication between trades is the key to a simple installation.
The QWX Intumescent Fire Collar should be fed around the plastic pipe, securing the ends together by passing the tongues on one end through the slots on the other end. The tongues should then be bent back and the unit secured to the structure using the correct fixings through all the lugs.
(It is not a tested solution to not use all the lugs so space so should be allowed for the fixing of the QWX Fire Collar during design and installation of the pipework.)
A full set of installation details and a step by step guide are available and we recommend you check all available data before commencing installation but in principle the QWX Intumescent Fire Collar can be fixed as follows:
- To concrete and masonry walls and floors using M8x60mm steel sleeve anchors.
- To QF2 Fire protection compound using M8x60mm steel sleeve anchors.
*Please note that custom made items can expect to have longer lead times. Next working day is typical but can depend on outside factors not controlled by Quelfire.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the different types of fire collars?
What are the different types of fire collars?
There are two types of fire collars available for firestopping. Traditional fire collars, such as the QWX Fire Collar, are ideal for retrofitting. In contrast, cast-in fire collars are intended for new-build projects, typically installed before the concrete is poured. The most suitable fire collar for you will depend on your specific application – always reach out if you have any questions!
Where do you need fire collars?
Where do you need fire collars?
The appropriate fire collar will change based on the application in question. For instance, the QWX Fire Collar is specifically designed to firestop large-diameter plastic pipes (from 200 to 400mm) that penetrate compartment lines.
What size are fire collars?
What size are fire collars?
Traditional fire collars are available in a range of sizes to fit different pipe diameters; for instance, the QWR Fire Collar fits pipes with diameters from 25 to 160mm, while the QWX Fire Collar accommodates larger diameters of plastic pipes ranging from 200 to 400mm.
What is the largest diameter pipe I can use a QWX Fire Collar for?
What is the largest diameter pipe I can use a QWX Fire Collar for?
We now have test evidence for HDPE pipes up to 315mm diameter going through QF2 Fire Protection Compound in floors, and also going through QuelStop Fire Batt in walls. These are firestopped using our QWX Fire Collar.
