Acoustic Intumescent Putty Pad | PUTPAD

Description

Designed to maintain the fire resistance of plasterboard walls where electrical socket boxes have been installed, Quelfire Intumescent & Acoustic Putty Pads contain an intumescent material that effectively slows the spread of fire and smoke when exposed to heat.

While they are known for their excellent fire-resistance properties, they also provide a cold smoke seal and help to reduce air leakage, supporting lower energy costs and reduced carbon emissions.

Intumescent putty pads are easily installed by hand and are suitable for both plastic and metal socket boxes, including multimedia socket plates. They have been tested to address common challenges on-site and can also be retrofitted. This makes them a perfect solution for new builds and existing buildings.

Standards & Approvals

  • Quelfire Intumescent & Acoustic Putty Pads have been tested for fire resistance according to BS EN 1366-3 and evaluated to BS EN 1363-1, offering up to 2 hours of fire protection.
  • They have also been tested for acoustic properties in accordance with BS EN ISO 140-3, calculated following BS EN ISO 717-1, and provide up to 70dB reduction.

Quelfire Intumescent Acoustic Putty Pads are suitable for use in both metal and plastic electric socket boxes and to suit both single and double electric socket boxes.

They can be fitted during installation of the socket boxes or as a retrofit solution. Installation is simple and requires no special tools or skills, furthermore, a detailed installation guide is available.

The simple process is: remove the cover plate, ensure the box is dust free, remove the backing paper and mould the putty pad into the socket box ensuring the socket box is completely covered right out to the front face of the wall, trimming off any excess if required. A slit can be cut with a knife where any wires penetrate and the putty can then be resealed around the wire once fitted.

They can be installed into sockets that are both offset or back-to-back, plastic or metal, single double or media size and in either single skin or double skin fire rated plasterboard walls as well as in conjunction with BeadMaster socket surrounds. For a step by step installation guide detailing each of these scenarios, please refer to the Installation Instructions PDF.

There is also a video at the bottom of this page which walks you through how to install a putty pad into a socket box.

Firestopping Product Spotlight: Intumescent & Acoustic Putty Pad

As Alec Purdie (Technical Manager) explains, we have tested Putty Pads in a variety of applications. For plastic socket boxes, they have been tested in double skin plasterboard walls. Most manufacturers will only test plastic socket boxes; however, we have also tested metal socket boxes.

This short video, demonstrated by Glenn Hutchins (Business Development Manager), shows how to install an Intumescent & Acoustic Putty Pad into a socket box.

Firestopping Tested Detail: Putty Pads in Socket Boxes with Close Proximity

One of the unique details we have tested is with metal socket boxes. Unlike other manufacturers, which typically have an allowance of 200mm, we now have an allowance for a gap of 20mm between two electric socket boxes. Another unique feature we have tested is a 5mm gap between the socket box and the last layer of plasterboard.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Quelfire Putty Pads used for?

Quelfire Putty Pads are intumescent pads designed to maintain compartment lines where electrical socket boxes are installed.

Do I need to use Putty Pads for every socket box in a wall?

A putty pad should be used when an electrical socket box has been installed in a fire-rated plasterboard wall. This helps to maintain the integrity of the walls, preventing the spread of fire and smoke.

Who installs putty pads?

The installation of any firestopping product should be done by a competent individual. In the case of a putty pad, this may be the electrician or the firestopping contractor.

Can I use Putty Pads on both metal and plastic socket boxes?

Quelfire Putty Pads have been tested in both plastic and metal socket boxes in single and double configurations. Please check the tested scope of application in our Standard Tested Details library.

Are Quelfire Putty Pads suitable for back-to-back sockets?

Depending on your configuration, yes. We do have tested evidence for back-to-back socket installations to ensure appropriate fire performance. Take a look at our tested applications in our Standard Tested Details Library.

I've used BoxStrap to hold my socket boxes in place. Can I still use Quelfire Putty Pads?

Our putty pads have been tested with BoxStrap. Take a look at our standard tested details and find a solution that suits your construction.
