Intumescent Fire Collar for Plastic Pipes | QWR
Description
Description
The QWR Fire Collar consists of a continuous pressed stainless steel flexible shell containing high performance graphite based intumescent material which reacts under the influence of heat to exert pressure on the pipe as it softens to form a carbonaceous char which provides an effective insulation plug thus preventing fire passing through to the adjoining compartment.
The QWR Intumescent Fire Collar has been rigorously tested to BS EN 1366-3 (the fire resistance test standard for service penetrations) and classified to EN 13501-2 (fire classification of construction products and building elements). The QWR Intumescent Fire Collar has been fire tested in a variety of applications with some achieving 240 minutes* Integrity and Insulation fire resistance (EI 240), delivering a reliable penetration seal for plastic pipes through walls and floors.
The QWR Fire Collar has built in fixing lugs which are used to secure it to the structure.
*EI 240 was achieved using specific testing configurations. Please check the tested scope of application to ensure suitability for specific site conditions.
Standards & Approvals
Standards & Approvals
The QWR Intumescent Fire Collars should be used where a plastic pipe penetrates a fire-rated wall or floor.
- For vertical pipework, one unit is to be installed to the underside of the floor.
- For horizontal pipework, one unit is to be fitted to both sides of the wall.
The surface where the QWR Intumescent Fire Collar is fitted to must be clean and free of loose debris/dust. Any irregularities between the QWR and the supporting construction, and between the pipe and supporting construction, should be filled by applying QuelStop Intumescent Acrylic Sealant.
The aperture for the plastic pipe should be drilled as close as possible to the outside diameter of the plastic pipe, and aperture sizes are described in the “Specification Details” table shown further below on this page.
If the apertures are drilled too large, then additional Quelfire products such as QF2 Fire Protection Compound or QuelStop Fire Batt will be required, so care and communication between trades is the key to a simple installation.
The QWR Intumescent Fire Collar should be fed around the plastic pipe, securing the ends together by passing the tongues on one end through the slots on the other end. The tongues should then be bent back, and the unit secured to the structure using the correct fixings through all the lugs.
(It is not a tested solution to not use all the lugs, so space should be allowed for the fixing of the QWR Intumescent Fire Collar during design and installation of the pipework.)
A full set of installation details and a step-by-step guide are available, and we recommend you check all available data before commencing installation, but in principle, the QWR Intumescent Fire Collar can be fixed as follows:
- To concrete and masonry walls and floors using M8x60mm steel sleeve anchors.
- To plasterboard fire rated partitions using through bolts or M6x65mm steel hollow wall anchors (to suit the correct plasterboard thickness).
- To QuelStop Fire Batt using steel pigtail screws.
- To QF2 Fire protection compound using M6 X 36mm steel sleeve anchors.
*Please note that custom made items can expect to have longer lead times. Next working day is typical but can depend on outside factors not controlled by Quelfire.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the QWR Fire Collar used for?
What is the QWR Fire Collar used for?
The QWR Fire Collar is designed to maintain fire compartmentation by sealing around plastic pipes that pass through fire-rated walls and floors, preventing the spread of fire and smoke.
How does the QWR Fire Collar work?
How does the QWR Fire Collar work?
The collar contains intumescent material that expands when exposed to heat. This expansion closes off the softened plastic pipe, creating a fire-resistant seal within the penetration.
How should the QWR Fire Collar be fixed in place?
How should the QWR Fire Collar be fixed in place?
It should be mechanically fixed to the wall or floor using appropriate fixings in all of the lugs, as per the tested detail.
